19/12/2008 - First Announces New Prices in York
FIRST, the leading bus operator in York, has today announced price changes to its City services with effect from Sunday 4th January 2009.

Richard Eames, Managing Director for First in York, said: “It’s a year since the last price revision on our City services and we must make these price changes to meet the ongoing challenge of rising costs to our business.”

In 2009 First anticipate costs will be in excess of 10% above this year’s level and the fare change introduced in January will only go part way towards meeting this increase. A number of internal cost saving activities are currently being implemented to minimise the overall price increase and financial impact on customers in York.

Mr Eames added, “We appreciate nobody likes it when prices go up and in York we have made every effort to avoid additional increases during 2008 even during a very difficult Summer when oil prices were at a peak and other operators raised their prices.”

He continues, “We have worked hard to keep these increases to a minimum and have held the price of a number of our popular tickets such as the £1 single and FirstNight ticket. The cost of travel with First still represents value for money, for example daily travel with a First4Week ticket is less than £1.80 a day and until the end of January 2009 a FirstAnnual ticket can be bought at the 2008 price of £517.”

First has and continues to make significant financial investment to benefit York bus customers through new vehicles, CCTV for customer safety and information systems to support the introduction of YourNextBus next year, real time technology that lets customers know when their next bus is due.
